Minimum Wage 2027: Aggressive Increase Would Heighten Pressure on Inflation, Employment and Pensions

Portafolio

Labor and Employment attorney Ana María Cubillos was interviewed by Portafolio about the factors that will influence the debate on Colombia's minimum wage for 2027 and the potential effects a significant increase could have on the country's economy. Ana María explained that in addition to typical variables such as inflation, productivity and economic growth, the negotiations will be shaped by the country's fiscal situation, business costs and the impact on obligations indexed to the minimum wage, such as certain pensions. She also noted that a moderate adjustment would help protect workers' purchasing power without majorly affecting formal job creation or business sustainability.

"A disproportionate increase could generate additional inflationary pressures, discourage employment formalization and raise the cost of obligations indexed to the minimum wage, such as pensions," she said.
