Kyle H. Wingfield

Kyle Wingfield helps multistate businesses resolve complex state and local tax controversies and manage the tax issues that arise in mergers and acquisitions (M&A), allowing them to focus on operating and growing their businesses. Based in Richmond, he advises publicly traded companies and privately held businesses, including manufacturers, retailers, contractors, technology companies and service providers.

Kyle guides clients through every phase of state and local tax (SALT) controversy, from audits and administrative appeals through court proceedings. He also advises businesses on voluntary disclosures, helping them address potential exposure proactively.

On the advisory side, Kyle regularly counsels clients on corporate income tax, sales and use tax, personal property tax and business license tax matters, as well as SALT implications of M&A transactions. He works closely with clients to understand their business objectives and develop practical solutions, and clients value his responsiveness, attention to detail and ability to explain complicated tax matters clearly.

Kyle is an active leader in the SALT community. He chairs the Virginia Bar Association's Tax Section, serves on the executive committee of the American Bar Association (ABA) State and Local Tax Section, is managing editor of Connexus, the ABA's state and local tax publication, and is the secretary for the National Association of State Bar Tax Sections. He also speaks and writes frequently on SALT issues affecting multistate businesses.

Before joining the Firm, Kyle chaired the tax controversy and SALT sections at a full-service law firm. Earlier, he worked at one of the Big Four accounting firms, assisting with state and federal tax returns and provisions for Fortune 500 companies. That combination of controversy, advisory and accounting experience gives clients a practical, well-rounded perspective on their SALT obligations.
