Tax attorneys Jennifer Karpchuk, Matt Kirk and Brock Whalen will speak at the National Association of State Bar Tax Sections (NASBTS) 47th Annual Conference, taking place at Holland & Knight's Philadelphia office. The conference will bring together tax practitioners and advisors to examine important federal and state tax developments affecting businesses and individuals, with sessions exploring emerging issues involving tax policy, compliance, enforcement and planning, along with the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the legal profession.

In addition to delivering introductory remarks in her role as the organization's Philadelphia chair, Jennifer will participate in a panel examining the state-level shift toward single-sales-factor apportionment and the implications for multistate taxpayers. Beginning with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Moorman Manufacturing Co. v. Bair, which upheld Iowa's single-sales-factor formula against Due Process and Commerce Clause challenges, she will analyze subsequent disputes over whether these regimes fairly reflect taxpayers' in-state activities.

Matt's session will explore "hot" retirement planning strategies individuals at all income levels are considering as they look ahead toward rising costs, extended life expectancies and waning pension benefits. He will talk about Roth conversions, Individual Retirement Account (IRA) factors, private placement life insurance and other mechanisms being utilized by middle class and high-net-worth earners alike. The presentation will additionally cover trust techniques and insurance planning.

During Brock's session, attendees will hear an overview of the most significant developments affecting federal tax controversy, compliance, planning and reporting. He will review key legislation, regulations, judicial decisions, IRS administrative guidance and enforcement initiatives that have shaped the federal tax landscape throughout the past year.
