Separation Anxiety: The Ethics of Lawyer Transitions
Legal ethics attorney Trisha Rich wrote an article for the American Bar Association's The Young Lawyer magazine about an attorney's ethical responsibilities when changing firms. Ms. Rich describes various contractual and ethical obligations lawyers should note when preparing to transition; for example, most firms require a notice period, and a jurisdiction's Rules of Professional Conduct may provide additional guidance. She also talks about giving notice and advises attorneys to avoid disclosing too much information when completing the conflicts process.
