What the Constitution Tells Us About Ethical Artificial Intelligence
New York Law Journal
Constitutional law attorney Christopher Riano wrote a column for the New York Law Journal reflecting on how core principles of the American constitutional system can help guide the ethical development and use of artificial intelligence (AI). In the piece, Mr. Riano argues that as AI increasingly shapes decision-making and governance, its use should remain grounded in three constitutional values: visibility, reviewability and accountability. He says this means that the public should understand when AI is influencing consequential decisions, that those decisions must remain open to explanation and challenge, and that responsibility for AI-assisted outcomes must always remain with human institutions. The article concludes that these enduring constitutional principles provide a steady framework for ensuring that technological innovation develops within the boundaries of fairness, deliberation and the rule of law.
