Report: Flood of Laws Turns Unwitting Citizens Into Criminals
A recent report from the American Legislative Exchange Council finds the issue of over-criminalization continues to grow in the U.S. as people are imprisoned for minor infractions. Litigation Partner William Shepherd notes the case of John L. Yates, a Florida commercial fisherman convicted by a federal jury for destroying evidence, in this case three undersize red grouper.
"We need to prioritize those who need to be prosecuted and use smart, evidence-based approaches to the punishment of those who have been convicted," Mr. Shepherd said.
