Data Protection Laws Take Center Stage For Global GC

In the wake of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), data protection laws have come into the spotlight outside of Europe. In Latin America, enforcement of laws is at a high and there is a much stronger emphasis on preventing data privacy issues.
Data Strategy, Security & Privacy attorney Danilo Romero commented on Colombia’s Superintendency of Industry and Commerce recently taking action against Facebook. "That’s good. It’s not because they have a penalty against Facebook," said Mr. Romero. "It’s an important message to the market that data protection is important and [regulators are] taking care of that."
