Real Estate attorney Esteban García was interviewed by Semana Magazine about the challenges facing the implementation of agrarian reform in Colombia. Mr. Garcia highlighted that, although some mechanisms for land acquisition could be effective, the bureaucratization and politicization of the process have hindered significant progress. Additionally, he pointed out that the current government's simplistic vision, which mainly focuses on the number of hectares distributed, does not take into account essential aspects such as rural development and poverty reduction.
"There are fundamental social, cultural and economic factors that are being overlooked in the implementation of agrarian reform. The focus has been reduced to such an extent that the goals are essentially measured in the number of hectares, when the core should be the improvement of development indices and poverty reduction in rural areas," he said.
