Private Equity Will Be Able to Invest in the NFL But Won’t Have Much Say in Team Decisions
CNBC
Sports Industry Team Co-Chair Anthony Mulrain was quoted in a CNBC article about the NFL's decision to allow private equity firms to acquire up to a 10 percent stake in franchises. The article mentioned that the NFL is the last major U.S. sports league to allow private equity investment, and although the funding could help with stadium upgrades and construction, as well as cushion skyrocketing team valuations, the firms will essentially be silent partners with limited involvement in team decisions. Mr. Mulrain noted that the private equity investment offers flexibility for team owners.
“You can use this additional liquidity to go in any direction. That 10 percent from private equity represents an opportunity but not a requirement,” he said.
