Major League Baseball Halted the Registration of YN Because of Its Replication of the New York Yankees Logo

Intellectual Property attorney Danilo Romero commented for Asuntos Legales on the decision by Colombia's Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC) to deny a trademark registration for the "YN" logo, requested by Jaime Wilson Giraldo, because of its similarity to the iconic symbol of the New York Yankees. Major League Baseball (MLB) argued that the coexistence of both logos could cause significant consumer confusion, as both products target the same market segment. Mr. Romero expressed his opinion on the decision.
"In the context of protecting industrial property rights, the Washington Convention grants special protection to signs that may generate confusion regarding these," he said.
