As Musk Exits, DOGE's Shock and Awe Campaign Against Office Space Grinds On

Bisnow

GSA Leasing & Federal Real Estate attorney Gordon Griffin was interviewed by Bisnow about how the Department of Government Efficiency's (DOGE) cost efficiency initiatives have affected the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) and the federal government's leased footprint. Under Elon Musk, DOGE attempted to accelerate efforts to reduce space by announcing hundreds of lease terminations amounting to millions in square footage. Mr. Griffin said his phone "stared ringing nonstop" as property owners and lessors reacted to the announcement and subsequent letters from GSA reiterating the intent to terminate. In the months since, however, activity has slowed as agencies have explained why certain spaces are necessary and DOGE has narrowed the list of properties for sale. Mr. Griffin said his experience working with clients reflects this.

"We still have a lot of new business coming in, but it's not quite as urgent and time-sensitive anymore," he said.
