Trump Turns Trade Talks into Foreign Policy Wish List
International Trade attorney and former assistant general counsel at the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Patrick Childress was featured in a Politico article examining how President Donald Trump's trade negotiations go beyond traditional trade concerns. Since implementing tariffs on nearly every country, the president has shifted from narrowly focused trade discussions to far-reaching diplomatic negotiations, addressing topics including technology regulation, defense spending and critical minerals. According to Mr. Childress, this strategy reflects the broader use of tariffs as leverage, and he does not expect the White House to alter its course any time soon.
"I see no evidence that the administration intends to reverse or scale back its use of this approach," he said.
