What Consequences Could MinTrabajo's Inspection of D1 Have?

El Universal

Labor attorney Camilo Cuervo was mentioned in an El Universal article about the Colombian Ministry of Labor's investigation of the grocery store chain Tiendas D1. According to the ministry, a recent inspected revealed presumed labor irregularities and, as a result, the agency requested that Tiendas D1 make a series of adjustments to guarantee the rights of its employees. The case has raised questions about government inspections of private companies. For his part, Mr. Cuervo commented that mistakes become more likely with larger companies and expressed that any sanctions should be based on technical criteria to avoid questions about the politics of the investigation.

"Every person or entity can commit errors, and this propensity to make mistakes is more significant in a business that has more than 25,000 workers," he said. "It is not that it is acceptable, but it is normal that with such a national presence, some mistakes can be made and there can be decisions that do not obey company directives."
