Ex-Trump Counterterror Lead Joins Holland & Knight in D.C.
Public Policy & Regulation attorney Ambassador Nathan Sales was recently featured in a Law360 article on his move to Holland & Knight as a partner in the firm's Washington, D.C., office. The article discussed his career as ambassador-at-large and counterterrorism coordinator at the U.S. Department of State, as well as his role as special presidential envoy to the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS. Mr. Sales brings extensive experience in international counterterrorism, sanctions and geopolitical risk to the firm's Public Policy & Regulation Group and National Security & Defense Industry Group, advising clients on terrorism-related threats, sanctions exposure, complex immigration matters and government engagement in volatile markets. He commented that following the Trump Administration's designation of some cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, one issue that's top of mind is helping clients navigate compliance with the order to avoid financial penalties.
"On one level you might think, 'Well you know, if I'm Acme Corporation, of course I'm never going to write a check to al-Qaida,' of course not," Mr. Sales said. "But turns out that in many countries in the Western Hemisphere, cartels have embedded themselves deeply into local economies and they control logistics companies, they control energy – they control a lot of seemingly private sector enterprises that reputable American companies might encounter in the business world on a day-to-day basis."
