Trump's Economic Agenda Hinges on the Supreme Court's Tariff Ruling

International Trade attorney Patrick Childress was quoted in The New York Times on the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to review President Donald Trump's use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to levy broad tariffs and the implications for U.S. trade policy. He noted that though the duties remain in place pending the court's ruling, the review injects uncertainty for businesses and supply chains, with outcomes ranging from a reaffirmation of expansive executive authority to curbs that could unwind portions of the tariff regime. Mr. Childress explained why IEEPA has been the government's strategy of choice when it comes to trade policy.

"Part of the appeal of IEEPA for the administration is its flexibility and the speed with which they could impose tariffs," he said.
