What Would Suspending the FTA with the U.S. Mean for Colombia? Serious Consequences for Exports, Investment and Jobs
El Colombiano
Labor and Employment attorney Camilo Cuervo was interviewed by El Colombiano about the implications of the alleged "de facto" suspension of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Colombia and the United States. The analysis addressed the immediate effects of a 10 percent tariff break: higher costs for exports and imports, adverse implications for supply chains, technical cooperation and strategic sectors, as well as risks to investment, employment and legal certainty. It also explained the applicable legal framework, including national security exceptions and the treaty's continued validity, and outlined mitigation paths and the need for prudence and legal rigor in the institutional response. Mr. Cuervo commented on the practical effects of a tariff break.
"This practice of nullifying tariffs will bring higher costs both for Colombian products going abroad and for U.S. products entering Colombia. In addition, it affects the supply chain and bilateral technical cooperation, which has been key for both countries," he said.
