CMS Opens Signups for Surprise Medical Billing Dispute Portal
Healthcare Senior Policy Advisor Jeffrey Davis was cited in a Nextgov/FCW article about a new federal online platform for managing out-of-network billing disputes. The No Surprises Act created the federal independent dispute resolution (IDR) process to settle out-of-network payment disagreements between providers and payers, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) launched an IDR Gateway platform to replace single-use web forms for initiating the process, accessing information and monitoring dispute status. Signups began September 15, 2026, and on November 13, 2026, users will be able to start submitting forms. Jeffrey commented that one of the benefits of a centralized hub will be the elimination of email traffic from notifications every time someone submitted one of the single-use forms, which at times made it difficult to track disputes and keep up with deadlines.
The platform will "help clarify and keep everyone kind of on the same page of where we are in different parts of the process," he said.
