Holland & Knight Advises Brimex Energy on Obtaining Mexico’s First Biomethane Production and Storage Permit

MEXICO CITY (April 24, 2024) – Holland & Knight successfully advised Brimex Energy, a joint venture between Mexico-based Grupo Serrano and England-based Farmergy, on obtaining the first permit in Mexico for the bioenergetics production of the biogas subtype biomethane. The permit, announced on April 24, authorizes the production and storage of biomethane.

The project includes a biodigester system for waste treatment, which produces biogas and CO2 and, through its treatment, creates biomethane. Located in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, the facilities and equipment will have the capacity to produce up to 27,000 m3 of biogas per day, which is equivalent to 12,456 m3 of biomethane per day, and a storage capacity of 11,500 m3 of biogas, which is equivalent to 4,200 m3 of biomethane.

Holland & Knight international arbitration and energy Senior Associate Antonio Barrera led the representation of Brimex Energy together with Associates Adrián Ortiz de Elguea Leiva and Mariana Salinas Ramos before the Ministry of Energy and the Clean Energies General Direction to secure the permit.

"The Brimex Energy project will bring important benefits for the Altos region in the State of Jalisco, for the community and the country," said Mr. Barrera. "With the execution of the activities under the Biomethane Production and Storage Permit, Brimex Energy will be able to continue not only with the correct management of organic waste from various local industries (livestock, tequila, among others) but also obtain biomethane for the operation of machinery typical of the agricultural industry and, where appropriate, any industrial use that is required, reducing the emission of polluting gases, avoiding contamination of groundwater and, in the process, treating water for agricultural irrigation."
