Overview
Andrew Grumet is an attorney based in Holland & Knight's New York office, where he works as a part of a multidisciplinary team that advises nonprofits of all sizes around the globe. Over the past 25 years, Mr. Grumet has served on numerous boards, worked as an outsourced CEO to a billion-dollar nonprofit, helped secure transformative funding and served as a trusted advisor to a wide range of organizations. During his career, Mr. Grumet has had the privilege of advising on some of the most significant transactions and projects, including, among others, structuring a variety of nonprofit/for-profit hybrids, impact investments, social and development income bonds, one of the most historic art acquisitions, innovative incubator models, as well as some of the most widely seen cause-marketing programs.
Mr. Grumet is an active speaker and media contributor, having been quoted in TIME magazine, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The International Herald Tribune, among others. He serves as an advisor to the Restatement of the Law of Charities and Nonprofits, a restatement that clarifies the law governing charities nationwide.
Prior to joining Holland & Knight, Mr. Grumet was the chair of the nonprofit organizations practice at a national law firm in its New York office.
Representative Experience
- Led team in the design and implementation of an innovative nonprofit/for-profit impact investment fund and foundation to advance women of color entrepreneurs
- Regularly advise boards with respect to creation, management and appropriation of endowments and restricted gifts
- Regularly advise charities in connection with compliance with state charitable solicitation laws and have led a team that provided registration services to numerous public charities with fundraising activities across the U.S.
- Regularly lead training sessions for board members, officers, staff and volunteers regarding best practices, fiduciary duties, legal developments, trends and techniques
- Regularly provide organizational audits of charities to assess not only financial strengths and deficiencies, but to determine the effectiveness of a charity's operations, governance and regulatory compliance
- Served as outside general counsel and third-party administrator to one of the largest charities managing donor-advised funds (DAFs) in the U.S.
- Served as counsel and general architect in the design, implementation and operation what was a first-of-its-kind joint venture among three large social service agencies in a major U.S. city that has become a model for numerous others; this project culminated in the formation of a new charity to serve as a joint planned giving fundraising organization for the benefit of the participating social service agencies
- Assisted local, regional and national charities in the establishment of planned giving and major gift programs, including the creation of charitable gift annuity programs, pooled income funds and captive donor advised funds; these engagements often included assisting charities in establishing fundraising committees, appropriate gift acceptance policies and donor confidentiality policies, donor recognition and stewardship plans, as well as print, electronic and website based donor solicitation materials
- Led a team in structuring a new approach to creating affordable housing combining concepts from development impact bonds and opportunity zones
- Led a team in the structuring, negotiation and implementation of one of the largest U.S. exhibition and touring of the Dead Sea Scrolls
- Represented a museum in its acquisition of a picture constituting one of the largest art acquisitions in history
