63rd Annual Hawaii Tax Institute
Hawaii Tax Institute Foundation, Chaminade University of Honolulu
Honolulu, Hawaii 96815
Tax attorney Megan Jones and Private Wealth Services attorney Michael Karlin will participate in the 63rd Annual Hawaii Tax Institute, a premier tax and wealth transfer conference for attorneys, accountants, financial planners, nonprofit administrators, wealth planning professionals, lawyers and more. In addition to Megan and Michael's speaking roles, Holland & Knight will sponsor the conference, and Private Wealth Services attorney Stacie Chau serves on the institute's advisory committee.
Megan's session will provide a comprehensive roadmap for founders, shareholders and wealth transfer advisors preparing for a liquidity event. She will highlight the gaps between operational readiness and implementable tax mitigation strategies, identifying qualified small business stock (QSBS) and entity restructuring as areas that merit particular attention. She will also compare a company sale, initial public offering (IPO) and strategic partnership, covering the tax and planning issues held in common by these events as well as the unique features of each. The presentation will offer attendees a guide to monetizing businesses both large and small.
Michael's presentation will focus on inbound and outbound wealth transfer planning, diving into wealth transfer rules for cross-border transactions. He will describe common scenarios in the inbound and outbound contexts and share practical solutions for managing typical issues, such as unexpected U.S. beneficiaries for foreign plans. The session will also feature examples to illustrate how these topics play out in real time.
