In this article, Mr. Packman discusses the IRS's use of whistleblowers to prosecute false tax reporting claims under 26 U.S.C. § 7623, which created a "Whistleblower Office" and provides incentives for ordinary citizens to share information with the IRS about tax cheats. On December 13, 2010, the Whistleblower Office indicated that it received more than 5000 cases in fiscal year 2009, 460 of which will likely qualify for an award.
