Litigation attorney Chiara Kalogjera-Sackellares authored an article in TortSource Winter 2022: Admiralty and Maritime Law titled "Maritime and Environmental Law Crossroads: The Intensifying Problem of Biofouling and Preventative Measures." Biofouling decreases a vessel's fuel efficiency because as growth accumulates on the vessel during its journey, more fuel is required to transport the vessel, and consequently, the vessel's CO2 emissions increase. In this article, Ms. Kalogjera-Sackellares discusses how biofouling has worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic and provides action items that ship-owners can take to make sure their vessels run as efficient as possible.
