Dynegy, Calpine Deals Signal Power Producer M&A Surge

Independent power producers (IPPs) have been struggling with flat electricity prices and market competition issues especially as regional multistate markets handle aggressive state energy and environmental policies. Dynegy Inc. and Calpine Corp. hint at leaving the IPP stage as recent merger deals continue to surface.
"I suspect there will be more consolidations and shakeouts in the near future," said Partner Stephen Humes. "I think that we're going to see at least a few more IPPs that have either been in the renewable space or the large-scale generation space that are going to be selling their assets when the price is right."
