Environmental Damage in Colombia: What Changes with the New Law and Who Is Being Targeted?
Environment attorney José Vicente Zapata was quoted in a Bloomberg Línea article about a new bill addressing the management of environmental liabilities and damages in Colombia. Mr. Zapata spoke about the fines related to environmental liabilities and the legal and sanctioning regimes that establish how infractions to the environment in the country are investigated and punished.
"The liabilities are generated by public and private actors. On many occasions, citizens also contribute to the generation of environmental liabilities," he added. "Typically, the liabilities derive from past industrial operations that were subjected to standards that have subsequently improved with scientific advances, also given the technique applicable to each industry."
