This Big Law Attorney Is Bracing for a Surge in Litigation
Litigation attorney Michael Hantman was quoted in an article published by Daily Business Review discussing the impact of a new whistleblower financial rewards program. The new incentives, created by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), work to fight corporate fraud and crime by rewarding people who disclose information about misconduct, such as foreign bribery, financial fraud and international corruption. Mr. Hantman said he believes this program will result in increased litigation. He also asserted that the new incentives will lead companies to tighten their compliance procedures.
"Any small thing could see the light of day because folks have serious incentives now," he said. "I would expect the DOJ to advertise this program so folks know about it. The reality is that in a lot of whistleblower contexts, there either isn't any incentive to blow the whistle or the individual doesn't know about it."
If an individual comes forward with a false allegation for financial gain, Mr. Hantman explained they will be prosecuted for obstruction of justice.
