Explainer: 23andMe Is About to Collapse – What Happens to All That DNA Data?

Medical Device Network

Healthcare privacy attorney Shannon Hartsfield was interviewed by Medical Device Network for an article exploring the data privacy ramifications of the fall of the genetic testing company 23andMe. The past year has seen the organization's stock plummet following a major data breach and the resignation of its independent board of directors. Many expect the company to file for bankruptcy, raising questions about what will happen to the genetic data of its millions of customers. Ms. Hartsfield noted this issue is frequently litigated and said the answer usually depends on the terms of service signed by users.

"The value of the company will depend on what people can and can't do with the data they have acquired, and that could present a potential obstacle because they are going to be constrained by the promises that were initially made to consumers," she said.
