NYSBA Annual Meeting Day One: Gen AI Ethics, Social Media Pitfalls and More

Legaltech News

Cybersecurity and data privacy attorney Mark Francis was featured in a Legaltech News article recapping the first day of the New York State Bar Association's annual meeting. Mr. Francis participated in a presentation titled "Cybersecurity Ethics for Lawyers and Key Data Privacy Updates," which sought to equip intellectual property (IP) attorneys with pointers for protecting themselves online, including on social media. He advised legal professionals to be mindful of their digital footprint, as organizations' information technology (IT) and security protocols can only go so far, and stressed the importance of separating personal and professional lives on social media.

"Even if you're at a law firm or at a business, they're not coming in to lock down your social media profiles and manage your social media accounts for you," he said. "When we put information and content out there on the internet, it's going to be preserved for eternity and that creates a record."

Mr. Francis also talked about password protection, pointing out that steps such as utilizing different passwords for different accounts and implementing multifactor authentication when possible are simple but effective ways to protection oneself and one's clients.
