Colombia Risks International Commercial Conflict with Block of Coal for Israel

Portafolio

Labor and employment attorney Camilo Cuervo was cited in a Portafolio article commenting on Colombian President Gustavo Petro's announcement ordering the block of a ship laden with coal headed for Israel. Mr. Cuervo clarified that although Decree 1047 of 2024 prohibits future coal exports to Israel, it allows companies to continue with contracts that were signed before the rule was issued. He warned that preventing the execution of these legitimate contracts could expose the country to commercial litigation and international conflict.

"Lawsuits against the country will come so that all of the coal that Israel stops buying from us would be paid by us to the companies that stopped selling it," he said.
