What Will Tougher U.S. Sanctions Mean for Cuba?

International and Cross-Border Transactions attorney Aymee Valdivia was featured in a Q&A with the Inter-American Dialogue's Latin America Advisor about the impact of tougher U.S. sanctions on Cuba under the Trump Administration. She explained that the prohibition of "indirect" financial transactions with Cuban Restricted Entities could further discourage U.S. financial institutions from engaging in Cuba-related dealings as a result of heightened compliance risks. Ms. Valdivia also noted that while these new restrictions may not heavily impact the Cuban economy overall, limitations on remittances and exports could immediately affect the government’s stability at the expense of the Cuban people.
"How 'indirect financial transactions' is defined will be crucial in determining the scope of the sanctions," she said.
