Legal Blow to Trump's Tariffs: What It Means for Latin America and the Possible Scenarios
Bloomberg Línea
International Trade attorney Patrick Childress was cited in a Bloomberg Línea article about the setback courts dealt to tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) and its implications for Latin America as the case moves toward the U.S. Supreme Court. The article explained that although the tariffs remain in effect during the appeal, the ruling introduces significant uncertainty for exporters and supply chains in the region, with scenarios ranging from potential refunds to accelerated regulatory adjustments. Mr. Childress warned that the U.S. government could attempt to reimpose similar tariffs under other legal authorities.
"The government could, for example, use Section 232 or Section 301 to initiate investigations into certain products or countries, which could lead to similarly broad inquiries," he said.
