Five Regulatory Trends That Would Impact Airbnb Short-Term Rentals in Latin America
Real Estate attorney Esteban García Jimeno was quoted in an article published by Bloomberg Línea about Colombia's bill to strengthen formalization and controls of tourist housing and Airbnb-type short-term rentals as countries across Latin America debate similar regulations. The article highlighted stricter registration rules, more traceability and data sharing, and increased tax collection through platforms. Mr. García said the proposal would increase verification and enforcement, particularly on land use compliance, and he stressed balancing regulation with promoting tourism.
"It is very important that there is real agreement with all the actors involved and that the regulations do not affect a business that today can represent a fundamental engine for the growth of tourism in Colombia," he said.
