Businesses Have Started Applying to Get Their Share of $166 Billion in Tariff Refunds
Litigation attorney Ashley Akers was quoted in a Marketplace article examining the launch of the federal government's tariff refund application process following the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that certain tariffs implemented under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) were unlawful. The article highlighted the significant financial impact on businesses awaiting repayment as well as ongoing uncertainty surrounding the phased refund process, which currently covers only a portion of what is owed and lacks clarity on timing for additional distributions. Ms. Akers commented on the high volume of client inquiries and how organizations are faring during these preliminary stages.
"It's been a really crazy time," Ms. Akers said. "Yesterday we fielded hundreds and hundreds of questions. I'm not seeing a lot of clients who are going to get 100 percent. It seems like a lot of businesses are going to get some early reprieve in this phase one, but are certainly still going to be waiting for additional refunds."
