$17 Billion Meta Pact Offers Compliance Guidance with Implications Across Industries
Data Strategy, Security & Privacy attorney Kristen Ricci was interviewed for a Cybersecurity and AI Law Report article examining Meta's $17 billion settlement with 52 state and territorial attorneys general (AGs) and what it could mean for companies across industries beyond social media. The article discussed how the agreement may influence future enforcement actions, governance decisions and compliance strategies for organizations whose products and services are used by minors, including businesses in the gaming, streaming, healthcare, consumer technology and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors.
"Now that this has been a coordinated effort among the state AGs, we're going to see them start using this playbook for other companies," Kristen said, adding the settlement will likely be "replicated at the state level in a lot of different ways." She warned that "the still-common strategy of relying on self-reported age will not be defensible in light of this Settlement," advising businesses to implement age assurance programs and consider other updates to their age verification processes.
