From Motorcycles to Booze, U.S. Ban on $1 Billion Worth of Canadian Imports Goes into Effect

Associate Press (AP)

International Trade attorney Patrick Childress was interviewed for an Associated Press article about the United States' ban on nearly $1 billion worth of Canadian imports, including alcoholic beverages, dairy products and motorcycles. The action, which took effect on September 29, 2026, marks another escalation in trade tensions between the two countries and adds uncertainty surrounding efforts to renew the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Patrick explained that the ban's immediate economic impact will likely remain limited because the affected products already faced 50 percent tariffs. He added that the measures probably will not cause enough of an economic disruption to bring either country back to the negotiating table.

"For a lot of these goods, the 50 percent was already acting as a de facto ban by making importation from Canada into the United States uneconomical," he said.
