Holland & Knight Hires Tax Controversy Partner from NextEra Energy, Inc.

West Palm Beach, Fla. (January 10, 2019) – James Dawson has joined Holland & Knight's West Palm Beach office as a partner in the South Florida Litigation Practice Group. For the past 11 years, Mr. Dawson was an attorney in the legal department of NextEra Energy, Inc. (formerly FPL Group, Inc.). Prior to that, he was a partner with Fox Rothschild, where he co-chaired the Tax Controversy & Litigation practice group.

At NextEra, Mr. Dawson handled federal tax litigation for the company and its subsidiaries. He also provided tax advice related to transactions and other business matters, and led the company's response to IRS audits.

"Jim is a nationally respected litigator who handles sophisticated tax disputes and understands the complexities of corporate tax credits," said Adolfo Jimenez, head of Holland & Knight's South Florida Litigation Practice. At Holland & Knight, Mr. Dawson will continue to focus on complex IRS controversy matters, representing corporations and individuals during audits and in the U.S. Tax Court. Mr. Dawson, who was born and raised in Panama and is fluent in Spanish, will also counsel foreign multinationals on U.S. tax issues.

Mr. Dawson received J.D. and LL.M. degrees from the University of Miami School of Law and a B.B.A degree from the University of Miami. He also attended Panama Canal College.
