Progress on the United Nations Commitment to End Plastic Pollution

Environmental attorney Dianne Phillips wrote an article featured in the EBA Journal Summer 2023 edition about a historic agreement, made in 2022, to address plastic pollution before 2024. The Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee's (INC) mandates includes all phases of the plastic life cycle, from design and production to waste management. Ms. Phillips discusses what happened during the INC's two meetings. The first session focused on accepting stakeholder feedback and establishing procedures for respectful dialogue. The second session continued the discussion about process and procedure, and hearing from stakeholders. She writes that given the global impact, the U.N. goal of eliminating plastic pollution is ambitious but worth watching.
