Gay Married Couples Lacking IRS Guidance Risk Paying More
Same-sex couples that are considering financial changes because of the Supreme Court's rejection of a federal law denying them benefits are being advised to be cautious with the decision. The couples are awaiting guidance from the IRS on how the ruling will be implemented in states that don't recognize same-sex marriage.
"We are desperately awaiting that guidance," said Private Wealth Services Partner Shari Levitan. "The major question for clients is for returns that are still open, and even those that are beyond the statute of limitations, can they be amended?"
