Litigators Divided Over Liability After Mass Shootings

Daily Business Review

Litigation attorney William Shepherd was cited in a Daily Business Review article about mass shooting-related litigation. In the aftermath of events like the recent El Mula Banquet Hall shooting in Florida, some businesses find themselves facing liability lawsuits claiming that they failed to implement adequate safety and security measures to protect plaintiffs. Mr. Shepherd, who has represented clients in cases involving shooting deaths, commented that these lawsuits aren't necessarily the best way to respond to such tragedies.

"I don't know that there is a solution for an armed gunman who walks in with five guns into a business," he said. "To me, enforcement of the gun laws, the better intersection of mental health issues and not creating additional layers of liability for people who are also grieving and in many ways are victims of these crimes themselves [is better]."
