Learn How Carbon Credits Work

Portafolio

Energy attorney Inés Elvira Vesga was cited in an article published by Portafolio in which she talked about how carbon credits work. She explained that the purpose of carbon credits is to set a price for carbon emissions, allowing those who emit greenhouse gases (GHG) to offset their emissions by purchasing credits from projects that contribute to their reduction. This system not only encourages a reduction in the carbon footprint but also promotes investment in reforestation and the use of cleaner energies.

"It's about assigning a price to carbon emissions, either voluntarily or by legal imposition in regulated systems, so that GHG emitters can offset by issuing credits from contributing projects to their reduction," she said.
