What UAB's Acquisition of Ascension Means for Employees, Patients and the Overall Healthcare Landscape
Healthcare attorney Colin Luke was quoted in a Birmingham Business Journal article about The University of Alabama at Birmingham's (UAB) acquisition of Ascension St. Vincent's healthcare system. The $450 million transaction, pending approval from the Catholic Church, would expand UAB Health System's network to include five additional hospitals and 19 physician practices. While some industry groups have expressed concern that hospital acquisitions can lead to higher costs for medical care and lower pay for employees, Mr. Luke said he views this acquisition as a positive development for Birmingham.
"As long as those systems are willing to put resources in to grow and to compete, I think it's ultimately good for the city and good for Birmingham," he said.
