This Is What Companies Can and Cannot Do with Your Personal Data

Forbes Colombia

Corporate attorney Anna Catalina Pérez was interviewed by Forbes Colombia as part of its Cybersecurity Forum that addressed the rights and responsibilities of users with respect to their personal data. Frequently those who share personal data with companies find themselves inundated with annoying calls, promotional messages and more, without knowing that they have the right to revoke the authorization of the use of their data for these purposes. During the interview, Ms. Pérez detailed what the rights of users are concerning their personal data and how they can protect this valuable asset.

"[The rights include] knowing if a company is using our personal data, and if so having the option to correct it if there is an error or it is not updated; submit complaints and claims to the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC) under this treatment, if applicable, and being able to ask a company how it obtained your personal data; part of the users' rights is to authorize and revoke — if possible — the use of that data," she explained.
