Virginia County Outside D.C. Joins Push to Make Some Office-to-Residential Conversions Easier
CoStar
Land use attorney David Schneider was quoted in a CoStar article about Arlington County's recent adoption of rules to streamline office-to-residential conversions. The article highlighted the county's efforts to address rising office vacancies by making it easier and more cost-effective to transform underutilized office buildings into other uses, such as apartments or hotels. Mr. Schneider elaborated on the new amendment's potential to significantly reduce processing times for building alterations. He also emphasized that while the streamlined process isn't applicable to all vacant office buildings, it marks a crucial step toward addressing the issue of outdated office spaces in the region.
"The goal here is with this new amendment, if you can meet the criteria, that the new streamline process would take between 120 to 150 days," he said.
