Trump Ends Clinton and Carter Policies on Federal Facility Sites

Law360

GSA Leasing & Federal Real Estate attorney Gordon Griffin was quoted in a Law360 article discussing the practical implications of President Donald Trump's rollback of longstanding policies on federal facility siting. As Mr. Griffin explained, now that the government will no longer prioritize urban centers and historic properties when deciding on facility locations, it has greater flexibility to consider less expensive office spaces on the outskirts of cities for new federal leases. He added that the effects of this policy shift will quickly be seen in lease procurement practices, enabling the administration to lease more peripheral spaces while continuing to reduce its inventory of federally owned property.

"I think this is going to have a much quicker impact and much more visible impact on leasehold procurement than it is going to have on inventory. The government's not acquiring any substantial amount of inventory under this administration; that train is only going one direction and that's to shed inventory," he said.
