Big Law's Government Hire Surge Under Trump Tests Profit Pools

Robert Friedman, co-leader of Holland & Knight's Federal Regulatory Practice, was cited in a Bloomberg Law article examining the uptick in Big Law hiring of former federal government attorneys and what that trend means for law firm profitability and growth strategies. The article noted that Holland & Knight was among the top five firms in hiring government lawyers last year, underscoring the firm's strength in public policy and government relations practices and strategic investment in talent with public sector experience. Mr. Friedman explained that although former government lawyers may not generate immediate revenue in the same way as traditional lateral hires, their experience and skill sets can help organizations deepen existing client relationships and expand into new areas of demand.

"It's true they don't come in with large books of business the way laterals do. But they have a unique set of skills that allows us to create opportunities for them," he said.
