Holland & Knight Adds Energy and Environmental Attorney Mark Kalpin in Boston

BOSTON (July 19, 2017) – Energy and environmental attorney Mark Kalpin has joined Holland & Knight as a partner in the firm’s Boston office. He previously was a partner at WilmerHale, where he served as co-chair of the Energy and Cleantech Group.

Mr. Kalpin advises clients on the financing, development and operation of energy, infrastructure and natural resource development projects, including offshore and onshore wind projects, solar generation projects, electric generation facilities, electric transmission facilities, LNG terminals, natural gas pipelines and subsea telecommunications cables. He has represented companies before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Army Corps of Engineers and Department of Energy, as well as state public utility commissions and regional independent systems operators.

Mr. Kalpin provides counsel on all aspects of energy, environmental and natural resource law and has successfully represented clients in federal and state environmental enforcement actions, administrative appeals and permitting proceedings arising under the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, National Historic Preservation Act, Federal Power Act and Natural Gas Act. He has assisted renewable energy project proponents in obtaining and negotiating the terms of grants, loans and loan guarantees from the Department of Energy and has negotiated purchase agreements, EPC contracts, fuel supply agreements and power purchase agreements for a wide variety of traditional and renewable energy generation projects.

“Mark has been practicing energy and environmental law for almost 25 years and is highly regarded in the New England energy marketplace and beyond,” said Beth Viola, co-chair of Holland & Knight’s energy practice. “His extensive FERC experience, which includes several years working for the commission, will be of particular value to our clients.”

“Mark’s offshore wind practice is among the foremost in the country,” added co-chair Michael Cavanaugh. “The firm already does a significant amount of offshore work, especially in the Northeast, and the addition of Mark positions us well as this segment of the U.S. energy industry continues to grow.”

“Holland & Knight’s platform will allow me to offer my clients a more comprehensive suite of services, including energy project finance and development, regulatory and government relations,” said Mr. Kalpin. “Its energy practice has a wealth of high-quality, interdisciplinary lawyers who are team players and work together on a collaborative basis – all major factors in my decision to join the firm.”

Mr. Kalpin currently serves on the Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board; the board of directors of the New England Council, where he is chair of the Council’s Energy and Environment Committee; and as president of Charitable Foundation of the Energy Bar Association. He also is a past president of the Northeast Energy and Commerce Association.

Mr. Kalpin received a J.D. degree from George Washington University Law School, an M.S. degree in wildlife management from West Virginia University and a B.S. degree in wildlife and fisheries biology from the University of Massachusetts.
