Jeffrey Mittleman Discusses Firm Culture and What Sets the Healthcare Practice Apart

Building Your Future at Holland & Knight Video Series

The best legal strategies are built on a deep understanding of a client's business. At Holland & Knight, our healthcare attorneys not only understand the laws and regulations that affect clients, but also the challenges they face from startup to sale. In this episode, Jeffrey W. Mittleman, co-leader of the firm's Healthcare & Life Sciences Industry Group and Healthcare Regulatory and Enforcement Practice Group, talks about his approach to client service and describes how his team helps clients navigate complex issues, evaluate opportunities and achieve successful business and legal outcomes. He also shares insights into the firm's culture, including the close-knit, collaborative community fostered in his home office of Boston.

"There's a lot of people who are very close to each other. It has a very small firm feel, but with a big platform," he explained.

Jeffrey W. Mittleman: I've been here for almost 22 years now. What's really kept me here is the culture of the firm in general. But I think this office in Boston is very special. There's a lot of people who are very close to each other. It has a very small firm feel, but with a big platform.

So 75 percent of the work that's done out of the Boston office of the healthcare practice is in the pharmacy and drug distribution space. And we really know the business. It's not just that we know the laws and the regulations that might impact companies, but we really have been involved in these businesses from the start to sale. And so we understand their operations, we understand the issues they face from a business perspective. Some of us, like myself, have been in-house at pharmacy companies, so we understand how they work and how they operate, so we can really help them from a strategic perspective and not just give them legal advice. But, you know, they come up with new ideas, we can sit down with them and say, well, these ideas might work from a business perspective, but have you thought about this? And that might be a better kind of legal outcome as well. I think we really understand their business, and that really sets us apart.
