Changes Coming for the Mining Sector: Is the Remedy Worse than the Disease?
Environment attorney Estefanny Pardo wrote a column for Asuntos Legales analyzing reforms to Colombia's Mining Code. Ms. Pardo comments that various roundtable discussions about the possible changes have indicated what those changes could be. The proposals include establishing a total environmental protection in the country that would impede future mining projects, the creation of mining districts or reserved areas for the use of strategic minerals for the energy transition and the legalization of illegal mining. In this column, the author poses some questions related to each of these changes.
