Underground Mining in Colombia: The Latent Risk of Dying Underground

El País

Energy attorney Milton Montoya was mentioned in an article by El País about prevention and safety measures in underground mining in Colombia. According to records from the National Mining Agency, from 2005 to September 2022, 1,925 people have died in mining accidents, 1,732 of them in underground mines. Mr. Montoya highlighted the urgency of strengthening control mechanisms to execute prevention plans and avoid more deaths.

"It's not about banning underground mining. In different parts of the world it is done safely. Standards must be improved to have a more technified and modern mining, and to carry out a good inspection. More effort is required on the part of the authorities," he said.
