More Controls or More Innovation: The Dilemma Created by the New AI Law

Intellectual Property attorney Danilo Romero in an article published by Dinero magazine as part of its lawyers' special edition about the debate in Colombia surrounding the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI). The article analyzed the current status of legislative initiatives, appropriateness of adopting a risk-based approach and challenges of coordinating a potential AI law with existing data privacy, cybersecurity and sector-specific oversight frameworks. Danilo emphasized the importance of designing regulations that reflect the country's particular circumstances and avoiding the adoption of regulatory models that do not align with Colombia's reality.

"We should have regulations that are appropriate for our circumstances. It is clear that we have made mistakes in the past by adopting legislation designed for contexts that do not necessarily apply in Colombia," he said.
