AI Is Impersonating Doctors – Are You Next?
Data Strategy, Security & Privacy attorneys Matthew Welling and Neda Shaheen were interviewed by Medical Economics about the infiltration of deepfakes and medical identity theft in the healthcare industry. Artificial intelligence (AI) has enabled bad actors to replicate a person's likeness and voice in a matter of seconds, and physicians are increasingly finding themselves the targets of fabricated videos and other disseminated materials, including AI-generated clips promoting unproven treatments that can both mislead patients and damage doctors' reputations. During the conversation, Matthew and Neda talked about prominent examples of deepfakes, in healthcare and beyond, as well as described what practitioners and patients can do to address it: consult legal counsel, report abuse or fake content to social media platforms, and document instances of fraud to facilitate a timely response from businesses and authorities. The interview illuminates an emerging area of misconduct that medical professionals should keep on their radar while providing helpful actions steps to monitor and respond to it.
